Work Experience

Student work experience is a wonderful opportunity to test personal vocational preferences through performing tasks in the workplace. Students are encouraged to select placements according to their future career aspirations. Our Gateway program work towards offering member schools the opportunity to be part of our work experience programs or to reach out to us to find a work experience program that’s right for them.

Benefits of Work Experience

Work Experience is a key step in preparing students for employment. Two thirds of employers look for a graduate with relevant work experience, it helps prepare a graduate for the rigours of a job and develop general awareness of the business environment. It will increase the student’s employability by adding additional skill sets to what is taught in the classroom, such as time management, work ethic, workplace culture and teamwork. It will also increase the student’s network, which could lead to other career opportunities or fulltime employment.

Outside of Work experience you will also have school-based apprenticeships and traineeships, please go to the Department of Employment, Small business and Training for more information on this subject.

Gateway is here to support students on their journey to fulltime employment in Hospitality and Tourism!

Work Experience Scholarships

Each year the Gateway to Industry Program offers a selection of year 11 & 12 QLD high school students studying tourism and/or hospitality the opportunity to participate in an all-expenses paid 3 day 5* Hotel Work Experience scholarship at the RACV Royal Pines Resort, Gold Coast. This scholarship opportunity is open to students from Gateway Member Schools only. Teachers are encouraged to nominate 1-2 students that have shown they have a personal stake in pursuing a career in the hospitality and/or tourism industry and would benefit in their career from this experience.

Each school that wishes to participate in this opportunity must be aware of and follow the Department of Education’s ‘work experience placements for school student’s’ procedure (or their own similar Work Experience procedure policies). Nominations for this experience open in May 2023. Gateway Member Schools will be sent the Student Nomination link once it is open for application.

All nominations require a letter of recommendation from a teacher to be attached and if under 18 a parent or guardian must sign the online nomination form.
